There was a bit of unwanted excitement yesterday – the toaster went on fire. I blame Him Behind the Wheel’s gluten free and very crumbly ciabbata. We both stood in horror looking at the flames and then Himself started to blow on it. No joy – so I threw a towel over it, but as there was still air getting in underneath all that happened was the towel started smoking. By then we had disconnected the electricity and were looking round wildly for the kettle and water. Fortunately, it expired sufficiently to allow the whole thing – toaster and bread – to be thrown outside.
Things to learn from the experience:- 1) We need a fire extinguisher; 2) We need a new toaster; 3) It is important to stand by “automatic” toasters whilst they get on with the job.
Fire Blanket is what is needed – which reminds me, we need one too!
Absolutely do you need a fire blanket! and when you get one, make sure you read the simple but very necessary instructions about handling a fire with one – I learned the hard way when my wok went up in flames while I was momentarily distracted. But this is how I know how effective they are…:-)
The fire blanket is on the list; presumably it is more practical than an extinguisher which easily goes out of date.
i am glad that other people have suggested a fire blanket,
an extinguisher has the potential to cause more problems than it sorts out especially in a kitchen.
Thanks for the confirmation, Ian.
