Watched some daytime TV today – Inn of the Sixth Happiness. I last remember watching it when I was about thirteen. If was one of those uplifting dramas with a suitable love interest. Shame it turns out that in real life the missionary – Gladys Aylward – was not only accused of being a Chinese spy and bringing other missionaries into danger including torture, she was never romantically involved with her friend, who was a Catholic priest. She was deeply hurt by the liberties taken in twisting the truth to make it more cinema-worthy.
It is good to know the truth thanks to the net, but it does show how one can be wrongly informed by Hollywood.
