Like many others I am sickened by the empty apologies of the four ex-bankers yesterday at the Select Committee. Many years ago in another life I was an insurance broker. I was incensed, yet helpless to stop the behaviour of the local branches of one of the well known banks. Pressure had been put upon a client to move his business to the bank, so that his overdraft facilities were secure. As far as I am concerned this was the start of the insatiable greed that has led to the collapse of our banking system.
Having got that off my chest I shall try not to get angry at how the banks charge for every letter and phone call. There is a cartoon in the Times today that says it all. A man is opening a letter from the bank on which is printed “you are charged £35 for this letter of apology.
