Our local library van service has been spared the axe by Argyll and Bute Council. At least they have seen sense. The librarian/van driver is a cheerful soul who fulfills a real social function. He dispenses good humour as well as good books. To some older and disabled people he gives their main point of contact during the day. I first started using the service when my disabled son lived at home, and it was one of those little things that really made a difference to the day. Said son enjoyed the male to male banter. As a busy minister I rarely had time to visit the library in town so I appreciated the monthly turnover of reading material too.
Nowadays, I count as one of the elderly myself. Funny thought that…… still, I suppose I had better get used to it. The only alternative is to be dead.
